TTIC54: The Raven

Hey Twerds and Twihards!   I'm soooo excited to bring you this week's challenge!

In New Moon, we really get to know more about the "pack" and some of the Quileute traditions. In Quileute legend, the Raven is the trickster figure in Quileute Indian culture. His name is pronounced similar to bah-yuck in Quileute. (I found that tidbit somewhere on the internet!)

Raven is a shapechanger, who could assume any form - human or animal. The Raven is a clever and generally harmless figure who sometimes helps humankind, but he also has many character traits that are viewed negatively in Quileute culture (greed, laziness, arrogance, deceitfulness, and rudeness) and many traditional legends have to do with Raven misbehaving and getting into trouble because of it. The tricks sometimes backfire, but in the manner of great fables - they offered life lessons for the young and old.

Your challenge: make a project that celebrates the Raven or any other Quileute legend (google it if you need some ideas!)

I have two cards for this week:

The first features the Wolfpack tattoo stamp from Dragonfly Curls.  This stamp is hand carved - isn't it cool?  I heat embossed the stamp and the raven/branch is a sticker.

For my second card, I used my ink pads and a "direct to paper" method to recreate a background that looks like something sketched with oil pastels or artwork created with a brush.  The raven and branch is a sticker - and he's holding a feather in his mouth (the branches, ravens, feathers were in a package from Martha Steward).

Just us girls .... 3D flower challenge

Just Us Girls has 3D challenge this week, create a card or project using a dimensional flower.  And they had a great video tutorial on making a tissue paper flower.  Can you believe it??? I've never made a tissue paper flower.

I followed the tutorial (it was super easy!) and made my first tissue paper flower.  I used Berry Sorbet, Rasberry Fizz and Scarlet Jewel,  I used the round "pinking" circle nestabilities dies and I used linen thread to hold them together with a button (ink, button and twine from PTI).  The stamped sentiment is from Unity Stamp Co.

Just Be {ttic51 Edward}

The incredibly talented Jen of Deconstructing Jen brings us this week's challenge:

It's time to focus on Edward. Even though the stories are told from Bella's point of view all of the books with the exception of Breaking Dawn focus almost entirely on Edward, through Bella's mind. Even in New Moon when Edward is gone her every action is focused on not losing her connection with him. So for this challenge I want you to focus on your connection to Edward. What does his character mean to you?

For the creative challenge: Create a project that focuses on Edward.

So, as Twilight Tuesday approaches its first year anniversary, I decided to go "old school" back to the stamp I used on my first Twi card.  Its from Unity Stamp Co and its entitled "Just Be".  It reads:

Go for long walks
Indulge in hot baths
Question your assumptions
Be kind to yourself
Loosen up
Scream
Curse the world
Count your blessings
Just let go
Just Be

I thought it was fitting advice for Edward, who always is conflicted.  I choose a different color scheme, I wanted to work outside the typical red/black/silver - so I went with an antiqued russet and gray/blue.

TTIC50 ~ Charlie

The amazingly talented paper crafter from down under ~ Donna ~ brings us our challenge topic this week:  Charlie.

" One of the best things about Charlie is that he doesn't hover"

Stephanie discribes Charlies personality and temperament in this one single sentence. But as we know his relationship with Bella slowly changes from strangers being thrown together in awkward situation to a bond that any father and daughter would be envious of.

Challenge Portion: Create a project, be it a card, layout or anything that would celebrate either Charlie's and Bella's relationship or the bond between your father or a father 'figure' in your life.

Comment Portion: Tell us about your relationship with your father or a father 'figure' who is or has been special to you.

I went with a quote I thought summed it all up:  We do no remember the days, we remember the moments".  It seemed to sum up Charlie's memories of Bella during the years where she only visited him on holidays and summers.  This is one more with the foiled background (I think this may be my new fav technique!).  This technique is very easy, cut some aluminum foil (I remember the days this was known as "tin foil") from your roll.  Use a piece of cardstock cut to your finished size underneath for support (this keeps the foil from caving back in after embossing).  I use a bit of tombo mono adhesive to hold the tinfoil attached the cardstock (your CS can be any color, you won't see it - so feel free to use your scraps!).   This is the time to add color to it with alcohol inks (I used the ranger handle with blending alcohol with  "denim" as well as "stream" alcohol inks).  Let dry and then run it through your embossing machine.

And how great was Charlie buying her the truck?  I felt that it was really thoughtful - getting her a vehicle of her own.  While she's not always fond of the truck (would that have been her first choice?) the truck it becomes an integral part of Bella - its hard for me to think of Bella and not think of that old red, slighlty rusty truck.   So in homage to the truck, I'm reposting one of my cards from last year featuring "the truck".

Home is where the heart is {TTIC49}

Our challenge this week is from Erica :-) paper crafter extraordinaire!  Her challenge to us this week:

Throughout the series Bella discusses a lot of homes. She spends a lot of time at home, maybe not her home, but if the saying is true, it is home to her. This challenge is pretty simple. Make a craft based on either a home discussed in the series or what means home to you. Here are some of the houses discussed in the book...
Charlie's house: unchanged since Renee moved out. I always remember her discussing the yellow cabinets in the kitchen. Kind of small, a sort of bachelor pad with a bit of an outdated woman's touch.

The Cullen's house: Giant windows, open, white, three stories, a mix of modern and classic
The house on Isel Esme
Edward and Bella's cottage: my personal favorite, small, a mix of styles, stone floors, small garden, fireplace, think Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
and of course you can't forget
Emily Young's house with the flower boxes and something always cooking
Billy Black's small but welcoming home.

Comment portion: If you could build your dream home, what would it be like?

For this challenge:  I channeled those yellow cabinets in Charlie's home, the ones that are unchanged from Bella's childhood.  The background is embossed aluminum foil - colored with alcohol inks (it reminds me of those old tin ceilings!).  I paired the yellow (inspired by the cabinets) with red and the new shade from SU - Bermuda Blue!   Stamps are from Unity Kit of the Month (I believe this was the August 09 KOTM).   I was going to go with something a bit different - clean and simple (much simpler) but sat down in my stamp room and this was what came out.  The heart is on red CS and red dsp, and I used dimensionals to "make it pop".

My dream home?  I used to think it was an ocean side home ... but seeing the havoc hurricanes bring, I've changed my mind.  What sounds *perfect* to me?  A big home in the mountains ... maybe Tennesee or Georgia! I'd love it to be out west, but I could never tolerate the cold winters! Ooooooh, and a big kitchen :-) and a maid!

Peaceful Plum {aka one more jeweled card}

Even though PTI's WCMD challenges were limited to one in each category, using "India" (Challenge #3) as my inspiration - I made this card, too!

It features the stamp set "Snowflake Serenade" in fresh snow ink on an acetate panel!  I have a "love/hate" relationship with my acetate - I totally love the look, but I forget that the ink never seems to dry (at least not quick enough for me) even when I use my heat gun.  I will admit to completely smudging the first one I did - even after I thought the ink was dry.  Cardstock colors are Aqua Mist and Plum Pudding, in the middle is a panel I made with embossed aluminum foil that I colored with adirondack alcohol inks (Denim, stream and lettuce). 

Bee Thankful! WCMD triple challenge (SCS), PTI Challenge #1

(my card for PTI challenge #3 is here <------)

This card is for the WCMD SCS challenge WCMD09D (use chocolate, a sentiment of thanks and the sketch) as well as for the PTI Challenge #1 - Japan.  Our challenge was to use Japanese cultural/art history in creating a card: 

I've always found the Japanese culture fascinating.  From the unique style of artistic expression and it's meaning & history behind each traditional routine that they incorporate into their lives on a daily basis.  Your challenge is to create a project that is inspired by either the colors, the design or the themes that are prominent in the Japanese culture.  Stumped for ideas?  Google "Japan" or "Japanese Art" for thousands of inspiration pieces.

I thought PTI's:  Out On a Limb stamp set was perfect for this challenge!   I also used "Honeybees" and Honeybee Sentiments - all from PTI.    You may not be able to see them, but PTI's "Sweet Blush" ink was used in the background, as well as Hibiscus Burst, Raspberry Fizz and Dark Chcoolate (CS and ink). 

Enchanted Jewel {PTI Challenge #3: India}

Saturday was World Card Making day .... and I had some time to make a few cards!  This one is for the Papertrey Ink challenge #3 - India:  make a card that has rhinestones/jewels, gold, etc. 

I used the front of one of my Coldwater Creek catalogs and gold embossing powder to do the "faux cloisonne" technique.  I added a few rhinestones and my sentiment and poof!  the card was done!

Bond between brothers TTIC48

Jacquie - the papercrafter with an amazing eye for color - brings us this week's challenge.

As New Moon movie release approaches we are seeing amazing pictures of the Wolfpack who become Jacob's Brothers. In New Moon the wolf pack play an important part in Jacob's life and the effect they have on the Quilute community. This also affects the Cullen family, they have a treaty with the Cullens and in time see that they all need to work together to rid Forks of the bad Vamps. This week we will be focusing on the Bond between brothers and how we apply that to our human lives. Women can lean on each other and we are strong all on our own but now and again we need that males presence as a brother, husband, best friend as a grounding force...as a safe place to be. We see that in Bella's need for Jacob.

Craft Portion: Make something that refects brotherhood... Be inspired by the wolf pack, Edward and Jasper/Emmitt, even the relationship between Bella and Jacob. Make a scrapbook page, a card for your brother or maybe a book for that special guy in your life. Celebrate brothers in any way you would like. (this would be a good chance to find those awesome pictures of the New Moon Wolfpack).

For my card, I wanted to re-create the "band of brothers" Quil, Embry and Jacob - in the mountains of La Push in the fall.    I used my ink pads and a "direct to paper" method to recreate a background that looks like something sketched with oil pastels or artwork created with a brush.    I used some yellows and oranges for fall foliage, here in FL everything stays green year round and this the time of year I am wistful for fall colors (and cooler temps - its still 90s here!).  The Wolf stamp is hand carved and available from Dragonfly Curls at Etsy.

TTIC46 New Moon Motorcycles

The wonderfully talented and blessed Dani brings us our challenge today:  New Moon Motorcycles!

Have you ever worked with someone and an unexpected friendship developed? In New Moon by Stephenie Meyer we watch such a friendship bloom between Bella and Jacob as they rebuild a pair of old motorcycles. I love seeing them change from good acquaintances to having a deep, loving friendship.

I also love hearing about the motorcycles! There is just something them. While the Cullens had their fast cars, Bella and Jacob had their motorcycles!

Now for the challenge of the week!

The challenge portion: you can choose between these 2 challenges:

1. Make a project involving motorcycles. OR

2. Make a project that you work on with a friend

I created a "digi-stamped hybrid" card for this week's challenge.  I went with the motorcycle theme .... and used a movie still that I photoshop-ed (PSE7) into a sepia toned photo.  I wanted this card to capture the feel of Bella's memories (since we know that eventually she goes back to Edward) and then inked the edges in walnut stain.   I stamped the word "discover" as I just felt that word when I think and Bella and Jacob working on their motorcycles.
