I'm interrupting my regular blog feed to bring you some quick tips for those who never thought they would get a hurricane. If you're in the path of the hurricane (north carolina and eastern seaboard) - here are some safety tips from a Floridian who's been through many hurricanes:
1) if they tell you to evacuate, get out EARLY - there are millions of people who will all be leaving at the same time.
2) have food and water to take care of yourself & family for a week (3 days supply at a minimum). If using canned goods - buy either those with a pop top OR have a self powered (manual) can opener. If the power goes out and you have a grill - start cooking the contents of your freezer (you'll lose it otherwise) without electricity to keep it cold. The power will be out for a long time (possibly as long as a 7-14 days).
3) have a plan on how to reconnect with family members if you get separated - you may think that won't happen, but in Katrina MANY families were separated and it took weeks to reunite family.
4) make plans for your pets safety (take them with you or find pet friendly shelters) - have food and water for them, crates for dogs - carriers for cats (and a litter box).
5) put all the outside stuff away (planters, porch furniture, grill, etc) you might be shocked to see what goes flying around in 120 mph winds.
6) please keep an eye out for elderly neighbors
7) fill up your cars with gasoline, get cash and enough medications (if the power is out, you won't be able to pump gas).
8) keep copies of your most important papers - esp. your home owner's insurance. (A quick tip to keep other papers safe - buy large plastic trash cans with lids - place everything in bags - seal those up and place inside. duct tape the lid on).
9) charge up all your electronics, get your car charging cords ready (if you have cell service, it will be the only way to keep your phone charged)
