Is there a big lit up arrow in the sky pointing at my house? Some kind of cosmic Motel 6 - We'll Leave the Light on thing?
Here's my crazy story from Friday morning:
Just to set the stage .... the land around my home is pretty much in its "natural" state - Pine trees, palm trees, palmetto, and lots of other stuff like muscadine vine. I've seen a black and white cat cut through my yard and head into the "woods" back behind it. I always figured that cat was a "tom" and was probably somebody's.
Thursday, I realized that while the cat was walking, there was a small black shadow next to it! Yep ..... a little kitten. Okay, so I revised my idea that the cat was "tom" and maybe didn't belong to anyone.
Friday morning .... I opened up the garage door and went to take my garbage out. Something was in the bushes next to the house! I looked down ..... holy carp - its black and white with a striped tail! Yep - I striped tail!
So, when I got done hyperventilating that it might be skunk that close to the house - I looked down again - it was a little itty bitty kitten, black and white - with a crazy stripe down its tail! I went to grab it and it took off!
Only it took off in the direction of my open garage - and yes - ran right in!
Now I'm panicked, I'm supposed to leave for work in a few minutes! And a kitten just ran in! Oh the dilemnas! What to do .... leave it in there? What if its trapped? What if it runs under the car while I'm backing out? are there other kittens in there?
So, I went in, found the kitten - hiding behind a box. Unfortunately - the kitten took off for another part of the garage. We played this game several times and finally it ran out and back into the "woods".
Forward to Saturday morning ... I saw two kittens out there, they seem to hang out on the side yard, near the dense shrubbery - which must provide a great place for them to hide! Two kittens ... one black and white, one black. So, I decided to set out a bowl of water .... went back inside.
Last I checked, it appears to be 3 kittens! One all black, one black with a white pouf at its neck and white socks, and the black/white stripey-skunk one. I think Monday I'll consult with the shelter on catching them. I'd like at least to get the "momma tom" - "fixed" so that she doesn't keep reproducing. And if I can catch the kittens, maybe socialize them and find adoption homes for them. I'd say they're maybe 4 weeks old right now.
I couldn't get a great pic - but here are two of them.
